Is Body Language Important?
If we are trying to make a good impression - both socially and in business - we often smile and hold contact
the other person’s eyes as we shake their hand. The difficulty is that we give off thousands of other unconscious
signals through our body language that other people will ‘read’ instantly and instinctively. By shaking their hand
or standing in a particular way, we might trigger off old memories in the person we are trying to impress. Maybe an
old friend stood exactly like that, in which case our advances might be treated sympathetically. But if we stand
like the back-stabbing colleague who has treated them badly, our advances are likely to be treated as hostile.
In today's competitive business environment, the ability to communicate well with others is very important. Good
communicators are able to give out the right ‘vibes' - You may not consciously think about it while you are doing
it, but the use of body language postures and expressions account for more than 50% of the messages, which you
communicate to others. While you can use different parts of the body to send nonverbal cues, the important thing is
that others understand what it really is you are trying to say.
Did you know that a number of scientific studies have taken a closer look at the use of body language and the
impact it makes on others? The conclusion: nonverbal communication is about more than what a person is trying to
say. Body language is like a window looking in, giving others some insight about what you might be thinking or
feeling. The facial expressions and body movements that you use when speaking can tell other
people a lot about what kind of person you are. Have you ever wondered why certain people always seem to have a
crowd gathered around them, and why others are always all alone? Part of this is because of the messages they are
sending with their bodies. This is called body language.
 Your body language can help you make a great first impression when you need
to. For example, say you are being interviewed by a prospective employer and you are sitting slumped over in
your chair and you are not making eye contact. This shows the prospective employer that you lack confidence.
Even if you answer all of the questions right, this very thing can cost you the job. People don't pay nearly
enough attention to it. It
makes up 80% of your communication, then the inflection and then the actual words. It's important to be perceptive
of the atmosphere of the room if you want to manipulate it. If you can pick up some signs that your date is getting
bored with what you are saying, then you can change the topic and appear to be perceptive and not boring. It's just
convenient, that's all.
Body language IS controllable, You just have to change your inside so your outside corresponds. And it's not a lie
detector test. The symptoms people site as showing a lie is not showing a lie, but rather a discomfort, which is
not a lie. Body language is important because it's another way of communication that's just as important as
verbal communication. Non-verbal communcation is often displayed more than verbal communication and 99% of
the time it's known to be accurate. Someone can be saying things...lying but if they look left...there's your
answer. You find out more with body language than talking...you can't manipulate it.
